Harvard College Science Mentors Program

With the support of the Harvard College Women's Center, the Science Mentors Program seeks to foster a sense of community for women studying science and engineering at Harvard. The program links faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students in order to create a network for women scientists.

For Undergraduate Students

As a student, you may have questions and uncertainties about what lies ahead for you if you choose a career in the sciences. Perhaps you are still in the process of making important choices about what you wish to study.

Insight and advice from graduate students can be an invaluable source of information and inspiration! Mentors are committed to passing along the practical wisdom they've gained from real-world experience. They can act as sources of support, or someone who can give knowledgeable feedback on your ideas. The Harvard College Science Mentor Program can connect you with a graduate student in astronomy, chemistry, computer science, earth and planetary sciences, engineering, molecular and cellular biology, neuroscience, organismic and evolutionary biology, and physics.

For Graduate Mentors

The Science Mentor Program gives graduate students a valuable opportunity to share their thoughts about what has motivated their career decisions. Mentors can be incredible resources to undergraduates with questions about anything from choosing a concentration, to landing their first job, to balancing work and family life.

How the Process Works

Applications are submitted by both undergraduate and graduate students. Female graduate students are matched up with female undergraduates concentrating in a related field of science or engineering. Mentors and mentees have the opportunity to meet at their convenience to discuss coursework, research, graduate studies, and other opportunities in science. Pairs are free to create the mentoring relationship that works best for them. The Harvard College Women's Center will reimburse mentors so that they may have funds for the activities that they choose.

Each semester the Science Mentors Program also hosts an event so that all the participants may meet one another.
