Welcome to the inaugural year of the Harvard College Women's Center! We, the staff and interns of the center, have been working hard to bring you a full complement of diverse and creative programs and events this year, while continuing our focus on supporting students and student organizations in realizing their visions for community-building. In the words of our interns below, you can hear the real energy and spirit of the women's center coming through! We hope you will join us - often-- as we work to empower, inspire, and create a women's center that is truly by, for, and about students at Harvard. Susan Marine, Director, HCWC
Every day I work at the Women’s Center, I’m saying to the world that women’s issues are important, they are still relevant, and there is *a lot* more work to do in this area. I have a direct impact on what Harvard sees in the center, and on empowering women to be the changes they wish to see around them. Natasha Alford ’08
The Women’s Center is the one place where I feel completely comfortable. I have been able to marry some of my personal interests, such as directing fi lm and theater and creating innovative events that address women’s issues, with my work at the center. Jasmine McGlade ’07
Coming to work is refreshing as I grab my coffee and check in with all of the students who are there—I’ve met so many incredible people. Very important is the fact that HCWC allows me to pursue projects, related to my interests, that benefi t our campus! Elizabeth Bridges ’09
I have the opportunity to contribute to the powerful role that the Women’s Center has at Harvard, of educating and challenging our community while also being a place of acceptance, support, and respect. I have the honor of putting up shows of student art work that ask people to think and refl ect on issues of women, gender, and sexuality, but that also contribute to making the space supportive and encouraging. Lisa Miracchi ’09
The most rewarding aspect of working at the Women’s Center is participating in an institution on Harvard’s undergraduate campus that is truly for its students. It is one of the special places on campus where students can escape the pressures of academia. It is also a fabulous place to meet friends! Bianca Caban ’09
The Women’s Center symbolizes Harvard’s support of the examination of gender as it impacts all areas of undergraduate life. It’s a wonderful resource for students and student groups, and it’s committed to bringing thought and dialogue to Harvard with an organized strength that hasn’t existed before. Shirley Lemus Hufstedler ’07
The Women’s Center is well on its way to centralizing resources for students who care about women’s and gender issues at Harvard. We look forward to cosponsoring and hosting more events and programming this coming semester. Susan Yao ’09
As a grad student at the Design School, I love working at the Women’s Center, as it gives me a chance to feel more connected to life in the Yard and interact with so many wonderful people that I would otherwise never have met. Nikki Johnson, GSD ’08
Working at the Women’s Center is literally a dream come true for me. As a Harvard undergraduate (class of ’01), I dreamed of having a center like this on campus. After more than three centuries of Harvard being run by and for men, I am thrilled that students who care about women’s experiences at Harvard finally have a "room of our own".
